In 1965, the University of Florida developed a sports drink for its football team, the Gators, to prevent dehydration in the hot and humid climate. Research at the university showed that the players were unable to make up for the fluids and electrolytes they lost during games and practice. Moreover, they could not replenish their bodies’ carbohydrate reserves. Based on the findings, the researchers developed a drink with a carbohydrate electrolyte solution that improves water absorption during physical exercise and promotes the body’s aerobic performance during long-lasting endurance training. This sports drink was named Gatorade.
