Brothers Barney and Ally Hartman developed Mountain Dew in 1940 in Tennessee to mix with whiskey, as they had difficulties finding a soft drink that would go well with Bourbon whiskey. The name Mountain Dew was actually an old nickname for moonshine. Originally, the packages for this drink had a comic-like hillbilly theme.
In 1969, the Mountain Dew brand was acquired by PepsiCo, which turned it into an iconic pioneer of youth culture.
